Physician Fellowship

For physicians interested in specialty training in hospice and palliative medicine and end-of-life care, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care offers a fellowship, in conjunction with our academic partner, The University of Kansas Medical Center.

Founded in 2005, the palliative medicine fellowship is the first and only of this specialty in a nine-state area. It’s designed to allow physicians to develop specialty-level training in symptom control, ethics and caring for patients with serious or terminal illnesses.

The palliative medicine fellowship is affiliated with The University of Kansas Medical Center to provide an evenly balanced hospice and palliative medicine experience. Fellowships last one or two years and include rotations in the inpatient hospice, home care and hospital settings.

Rotations are four weeks each and include: The program will pursue the first accreditation from the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), under development nationally. The current program is designed according to the voluntary guidelines set by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

A weekly lecture series is designed for the fellowship and covers the most important topics in palliative medicine. The series consists of two single-hour sessions, 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays at Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo.

The series is open to health care professionals in the community, and CEUs are available for all meetings. View the calendar including the next lectures and other upcoming events for health care professionals.

If you are interested in applying for the fellowship, download the application and fellowship packet. We are looking for committed and enthusiastic applicants interested in developing specialized knowledge and expertise in hospice and palliative medicine.

If you have questions, please e-mail Joan Schneider, fellowship coordinator, at jschneider@kchospice.org or call 816-363-2600.
