Physician Fellowship

For physicians interested in specialty training in hospice and palliative medicine and end-of-life care, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is the community hospice clinical site for the University of Kansas Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship.

Founded in 2005, the hospice and palliative medicine fellowship demonstrates Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care's expertise and commitment to develop physicians with specialty-level training in symptom control, communication, ethics and many other topics related to caring for patients with serious or terminal illnesses.

The hospice and palliative medicine fellowship aims to provide an evenly balanced hospice and palliative medicine experience. Fellowships last one year and include rotations in the inpatient hospice, home care and hospital settings.

Rotations are four weeks each and include: In 2008, the program applied for the first accreditation from the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The current program is designed according to the voluntary guidelines set by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

A weekly lecture series is designed for the fellowship and covers the most important topics in palliative medicine. The series consists of two single-hour sessions, 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays at Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo.

The series is open to health care professionals in the community, and CEUs are available for all meetings. View the calendar including the next lectures and other upcoming events for health care professionals.

If you are interested in applying for the fellowship, the fellowship participates in the ERAS application system. If you have questions about the fellowship, please visit the University of Kansas Palliative Fellowship site or contact Nancy Houston, fellowship coordinator at nhouston@kumc.edu or 913-588-3807.
