Types of Care

When medical problems are too serious to be managed at home, short stays at Kansas City Hospice House can help. The inpatient facility may be the answer when the patient needs:
  • Close attention to bring pain or other symptoms under control. The Kansas City Hospice House physician will frequently assess and adjust medications to treat pain, respiratory distress, nausea, fatigue, weakness and other problems that cannot adequately be managed at home.

  • Transitional care when it is necessary for the patient to leave the hospital but families need education on care and patients can benefit from more time for medication adjustment. Staff will modify the medication plan as needed and teach family members what they need to know to care for their loved one at home.

  • More nursing care than can be provided at home because home support has broken down, the environment is unsafe or the family is unable to provide care in the home.

  • Stabilizing treatment, such as adjusting medications and emotional and social assessment or therapy.

  • Terminal care, short-term care to manage symptoms, maintain patient comfort and support family members as a patient’s condition is rapidly declining.
When patients come to Kansas City Hospice House, family members are relieved of the stress of providing hourly care and can instead focus on their relationships and making the most of their time together.

Occasionally, patients who improve but are unable to return home may continue to stay at Kansas City Hospice House as residential patients. This type of care also is referred to as non-acute or routine home care. This level of care is often only partially reimbursed by Medicare or insurance, so there may be a room and board payment charged to the patient. If the patient cannot pay the room and board fee, reduction or waiver of the fee may be possible if financial support guidelines are met.

Care From a Team for the Whole Family

While receiving care at Kansas City Hospice House, patients receive the same services from team members that hospice offers in other settings. In addition to doctors and nurses, the Kansas City Hospice House team includes social workers, chaplains, a dietician and volunteers. Patients’ personal physicians are welcome to continue to serve as their physician during their stay, or our physicians are able to serve as the patient’s doctor.

We also have staff who can work with children in the family and who can use art and music as a tool to help people of all ages express and work through their emotions.
Services are designed to meet the individual needs of patients and families.

In addition, there are many other caring programs that help make this time less stressful for families. All are welcomed by the hospitality of Kansas City Hospice House, which includes soup and other refreshments available for family.
