Overview of Options for Care |
 |
|
Patients at any stage of serious illness can find comfort and expert guidance from Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care. A variety of options for care are available for people of all ages and in many settings. Whether it is just one visit to help you decide what is best or an entire team of caregivers, we are here to help.
Our innovative programs include both palliative (pronounced pal-lee-uh-tiv) and hospice care, which means patients can have the expertise of our entire staff and individualized care at any point during serious illness. Palliative and hospice care are similar, but palliative care is often provided earlier or instead of hospice care, depending on the patient’s situation, needs and wishes.
Both hospice and palliative care offer specially trained nurses, social workers, chaplains, physicians, aides and other therapists who address pain and other symptoms, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families, and improve quality of life.
Palliative care can be at any stage of serious illness and is available for patients while they receive or seek treatments to cure or slow the progress of the disease. Hospice is a special type of palliative care for people who have life-limiting illnesses and who are focused on comfort, rather than a cure.
Patients may receive care from Kansas City Hospice in several settings—at home, in assisted living facilities or in nursing facilities. Patients who are unable to stay at home may receive care at Kansas City Hospice House.
Patients may receive palliative care at home through our Palliative Home Health Care program.
Other options for patients and families include:
- Consultations and home visits from our physicians and advance practice nurse, who are specialists in hospice and palliative care.
- The Passages counseling program, for anyone in the community dealing with issues related to illness, aging and caregiving
- Pediatric care for seriously ill children and perinatal care available to parents who find out their unborn child will be born with a limited life expectancy.
