Pediatric and Perinatal

For infants, children and adolescents with serious illnesses, our Carousel pediatric program provides specialized care at home. For families who find out their baby will be born with a life-limiting condition, perinatal support is available.

Carousel Pediatric Care

Carousel team members are specialists in caring for children with serious illnesses and supporting their families. Care is usually at home, but staff can visit children at school, day care, clinics or the hospital. Children can continue to receive treatments and return to the hospital, and the team helps with transitions.

Families receive care to fit their changing needs. It includes:
  • Pediatric nurse visits to manage pain and other symptoms.
  • On-call nurses available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for questions and visits.
  • Counseling and support to help the family cope.
  • Nondenominational spiritual support.
  • Trained volunteers to provide companionship for the child or siblings, run errands or give parents a break.
  • Art and music therapies to help the child and siblings explore their feelings.
  • Education on keeping the child comfortable at home.
  • Assistance with participation at school.
  • Communication with the child’s physician and other health care providers.
  • Monitoring the child’s response to treatments for the illness.
  • Assistance planning for future needs.

Families can participate in Carousel regardless of their ability to pay. Insurance companies are billed when possible.

How Care Begins

Care starts with a phone call from a parent, the child’s physician or a hospital staff member. Call 816.363.2600 to schedule an assessment to see how Carousel can help. Or, contact us online.

Carousel Perinatal Services

When sonograms and prenatal tests reveal problems that may limit the baby’s life, Carousel’s perinatal hospice program offers help based on the family’s wishes and needs.

A specially trained social worker helps the family cope by providing counseling visits, help understanding options and assistance in creating a birth plan to share with hospital staff. The birth plan may include the family’s decision on medical treatments desired for the baby, and what hospital staff should do when the baby is born. It may include rituals, such as baptism, desired after birth, and a list of who will be present at the birth.

Families also receive:
  • Support and help creating ways to celebrate the baby’s birth and life.
  • Assistance with planning final arrangements and celebrations of the baby’s life.
  • Nondenominational spiritual support.
  • Grief support for parents, siblings, grandparents and others affected by the baby’s life and death.
Staff are available to provide support at the birth. Babies who go home with their parents continue to receive services through Carousel.

Families may call as soon as they find out their unborn child may have a limited life expectancy. For more information, call 816-363-2600. Or, contact us online.
